Customer reviews: Artists at Continent's End ... - Following this devastation, artists left the city for Marin County, the East Bay, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles in Southern California, and also to Monterey, but the numbers moving to the latter were much exaggerated. However, it did have one important consequence, the opening in 1907 by the Hotel Del Monte in Monterey of the first gallery exclusively devoted to works by Californian artists. Before long, other large hotels in the West had followed suit.
